The Table serves a mid-afternoon meal Monday through Friday to persons in need of food and sustenance. This community meal program is held at the First Presbyterian Church and food is prepared in their commercial kitchen by over 20 community organizations.
For more than 30 years, Napa County Branch members have been preparing and serving a meal on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. We depend on casserole, dessert and salad donations from all our members as well as accept monetary donations to buy food that is not donated. Recently, the numbers of people eating at the table have increased and it is not uncommon for our volunteers to prepare and serve food for 150 – 200 hungry people.
Linda Terry, Martha Wise, and Maureen Grinnell are not only the organizers, but also usually on site chefs and kitchen workers along with the rest of the crew. Our day begins with early morning grocery shopping and then meeting at the church at 12:30 pm for food prep. Casserole, dessert and salad makers arrive with their food already prepared. The cooks make salads, cook vegetables, cut bread and desserts, and brews coffee and hot chocolate. At 2:45 pm, the serving crew happily arrives and all the food is served at 3pm. Serving stops at 4:45pm and then there is the clean up and dish washing. Leftover food is donated to the homeless shelters.
Everyone leaves tired but fulfilled, heartened by the stories they hear. One woman said that our menu helps her handle her brittle diabetes. Another man says that he can keep to a budget and pay his rent only if he comes to the Table for a daily meal. Guests are always giving thanks and blessings to us for the work we do.
Please join us. Donations of food are always welcome. Right now we are in need of persons who can be on site for “our day” when someone is unable to volunteer. Contact Linda, Martha, or Maureen.
